The IMO 6.09 Training course for Instructors is aimed at providing the knowledge and skills required for anyone wishing to teach STCW courses. Recent changes in MNTB and MCA guidelines have increased the need for instructors to have adequate teaching qualifications.

Course Syllabus
This course covers a wide variety of subjects including:
STCW Convention & Code requirements for competency-based training
Planning an effective learning environment
Classroom layout
Different learning & teaching styles and methods
Training aids
Use teaching activities effectively
Producing a subject-related lesson plan
Evaluating teaching and learning
Powerpoint design/use
Course design
Giving effective feedback
Briefing & debriefing
On successful completion of this course, you will be able to:
Instruct STCW Courses (assuming relevant subject knowledge/experience)
Instruct MCA Courses (assuming relevant subject knowledge/experience)
Become an RYA Shorebased Instructor, this is a substitute for the RYA TIC (Teaching in the Classroom)
Pre Requisites
Minimum age 18
Basic numeracy and written/spoken English
Familiar with common office software (i.e. Word, Excel, Powerpoint)
Hold at least two STCW certificates
Have specialist knowledge in at least one of the following;
First Aid and/or Medical Care
GMDSS
Marine Engineering
Marine Security
Sea Survival
Marine Safety
Fire Fighting
Offshore Oil & Gas
