RYA VHF Radio
The RYA Marine VHF Radio Course is for anyone who operates a fixed or a handheld marine VHF (Very High Frequency) Radio. The VHF radio is a very important piece of safety equipment on board and it is vital to understand the correct procedures and regulations. The SRC is the minimum qualification required by law to control the operation of the VHF and VHF DSC (Digital Selective Calling) equipment.
The course is 10 hours in duration and is split between 3 hours of pre-course reading, and 7 hours in the classroom. There is an independent examination at the end of the course which consists of a written and a practical examination.

The basics of radio operation
The correct frequencies (channels) to be used
Distress, emergency and medical assistance procedures
Making ship-to-shore telephone calls
Digital Selective Calling (DSC) using training radios
Global Maritime Distress and Safety System (GMDSS)
Emergency Position Indicating Beacons (EPIRBs)
AIS-SART (Search and Rescue Transmitter) and RADAR-SART (Search and Rescue Transponders)

SRC Exam Payment

The exam will take the following form: 30 minutes Written Exam, then 15 minutes familiarity of radios, followed by Practical Assessment – covering Routine, Mayday, Pan Pan, Security calls including using DSC Alerts.
