Using Electronic Chart Plotters
Another one of our homegrown courses. This is aimed at any person who uses Electronic Chart Systems such as Raymarine, Navionics, Simrad Multi-Function Devices. The aim of the course is to ensure you are getting the most out of your chart plotter. During the day we look at;
chartplotter orientation,
AIS overlay,
vessel headings vectors,
tidal information,
position accuracy,
use of waypoints,
building a route
a discussion on the limitations of plotters.
screen orientation, Head Up vs North Up
relative motion,
interpreting the screen,
Gain/Sea/Rain clutter controls,
IRPCS,
AIS and waypoint overlays,
what shows up on radar and what doesn't
and using radar for pilotage.

Advanced Collision Regulations
1 Day
Delivered at Rhu, at your site or online.
New for 2025. This is a homegrown course that is aimed at skippers and crew working towards Yachtmaster Offshore, Boatmaster or Master 200gt or Higher. The day will be spent going through the wording to the key rules such as 7, 8, 9 & 10 as well as the steering and sailing rules 12-18. The second half of the day will be spent looking at Lights & Sound Signals.

Action by the stand on and give way vessels
Impeding relationships under Rule 8, 9, 10
Actions in a Narrow Channel and Traffic Separation Scheme.

We look in detail at one of the key publications that is required to be carried on UK Vessels and how it can be used/referred to during day to day operations.

Classroom course £115 per person, £300 per day offsite with up to 6 students,
A 1 day course that looks into the weird and wonderful weather that we get in the UK. The morning is spent looking at the theory of weather, covering topics such as;
What are fronts
How they form
Types of cloud
Low Pressures / High Pressures
UK wind directions and the associated weather
Fog
Sea / land breezes
Terminology
The afternoon is spent interpreting synoptic charts including;
What they tell us
What are isobars
How to spot a change in the weather
The shipping forecast
The inshore waters forecast.
The last part of the course is spent looking at the various apps available including Windy, Met Office, XC Weather and Grib Files.
Pre-requisites: A basic understanding of weather, and weather forecasts, would be helpful
