RYA Powerboat Courses

We offer the complete range of RYA Powerboat Training  courses,  including the Advanced Certificate of Competence Exam. 

As with all of our courses, you wil have one of our experienced instructors in the boat with you at all times. The training can be undertaken on our boat, Maverick, from our centre in Rhu  or on your own boat. You can enter the scheme at any level, provided you have the correct  experience. Special Offers

RYA Powerboat Level 1

This one-day course is a scaled down version of Powerboat 2, focusing purely on the practical handling elements. During the course almost all of the time is spent on the water practising manoeuvres but there is also time to look at the safety aspects of boating.

Some of the topics covered during the course include: launching & recovery; boat handling; approaching and securing to a buoy; anchoring; leaving and coming alongside; handling a boat at planing speed; man overboard.

Duration: 1 day

Cost: £150pp, maximum of 3 students

Minimum age 8 (please contact us to discuss if candidate is aged 8-12). If under 16, certificate will be endorsed to show holder should use power craft under supervision only.

Included: 1 day of instruction in Maverick, our Humber Ocean Pro 6.8, fuel, lifejacket, light refreshments throughout the course & Start Powerboating Theory book

RYA Powerboat Level 2

2 day course, £320, maximum of 3 students.

General information:

The two-day RYA Powerboat level 2 course is aimed both at those new to boating and those with more experience who want to improve their boat handling. There is a small amount of theory to be covered during the course which includes, chartwork, buoyage, IRPCS, weather, personal buoyancy, awareness of other water users, tides and more.

RYA Intermediate Powerboat

2 day course £350, maximum of 3 students

General information:

The Intermediate Powerboat syllabus aims to provide a level of training to suit those who use powerboats more frequently, and in more advanced conditions. The two-day course covers the basics of navigation, practical use of daytime pilotage, passage planning skills and using both traditional and electronic navigational techniques on coastal waters.

Pre-requisites: Minimum age 16, theory knowledge to Day Skipper Theory Level, Powerboat Level 2 qualification

RYA Advanced Powerboat

2 day course with 1 late evening £350, maximum of 3 students

General information:

This two day course is for more experienced leisure and professional powerboaters wishing to skipper small powerboats further afield and at night. 

As well as having high levels of boat handling skills, candidates should be competent to the standard of intermediate powerboat with a thorough knowledge of navigation and chartwork to the level of Coastal Skipper theory. It is strongly recommended that students also hold a first aid certificate, and a radio operators certificate 

Please note that this course does not include an exam for a commercial endorsement. (see Certificates of Competence )

RYA Advanced Prep Course & Exam

2 day course £385, maximum of 3 students NB - The Exam Fee is NOT included in the course fee.

This is a bespoke prep course, specifically tailored to candidates completing the Advanced Certificate of Competence exam. Subjects which can be refreshed include IRPCS, pilotage, boat handling, night navigation, etc. This is a NON-CERTIFIED course, so other subjects can be added.

There will be a night exercise on Day 1 and another on Day 2 can be arranged (at extra cost).

We plan our Advanced Powerboat courses and Advanced Exam Prep courses to run back to back, which essentially gives you an intensive 4 day prep course before the exam on day 5


Pre-Requisites:

If you hold an RYA Advanced Powerboat Course Completion Certificate, the seatime is reduced to 20 days, 2 days as skipper, 400 miles, 12 night hours. All be within 10 years prior to the exam
