Basic Safety Equipment for RYA Own-Boat Training

The majority of the RYA courses can be run on your own boat. The RYA student/instructor ratios (power 3:1, motor 5:1) need to be adhered to and the boats have to be suitable for the training and come with a minimum level of safety equipment. 

Equipment Required for Own Boat Training(A–Strongly Advised) (R–Required)

  • Anchor(R)

  • Bilge pump (manual as well as electric)(A)

  • Radar reflector(A)

  • Flares for the waters in which you will use your boat(R)

  • Fire extinguishers and fire blanket(R)

  • Lifejackets (R)

  • Liferaft(A)

  • Horse shoe buoy(R)

  • Man overboard recovery equipment(A)

  • VHF Radio (R)

  • Navigational equipment (Almanac, charts, plotter, dividers and GPS)(R)

  • First Aid kit(R)

  • Mooring warps and fenders(R)

  • Tool kit(A)

  • Depth and speedtransducers (R)

  • Engine spars–fuel/oil filters, drive belt, impeller spare oil(R)
