Advanced Collision Regulations

This course is aimed at people who are interested in getting into the Maritime Industry and specifically in a deck capacity in the small commercial sector. We look into the Codes of Practice, what qualifications are required, pre-requisites, the different sectors of the industry, and more.

Master’s Responsibilities

Maritime law is very complex. This course is aimed at simplifying the rules and regulations around working as a Master on a small commercial vessel under the UK Codes of Practice.

  • The course looks at the responsibilities of a master/skipper of a UK Flagged vessel:

    • Training, & Certification

    • COSWOP

    • Safe Access

    • Manning

    • IRPCS

    • SOLAS

    • ISM and Safety Management Systems

    • Maritime Labour Convention

    We look back at various MAIB Reports and the power of the MCA and commercial regulators.

Electronic Navigation & Radar

This one-day classroom course is split into 2 parts with the morning spent planning a short passage using the chartplotter., and the afternoon using the radar simulator. Small craft radar is probably the most versatile of all electronic navigation aids and arguably the least well utilised.

We cover a variety of subjects including, in the morning: chartplotter orientation; AIS overlay; vessel headings vectors; tidal information; plotter accuracy; use of waypoints; building a route; a discussion on the limitations of plotters.

And in the afternoon: screen orientation, Head Up vs North Up: relative motion; interpreting the screen; Gain/Sea/Rain clutter controls; IRPCS; AIS and waypoint overlays; what shows up on radar and what doesn't; using radar for pilotage; MARPA

Understanding Weather

In this one-day course we dive deep into the complex world of weather and weather forecasting.

Use of Apps in forecasting

No pre-requisites although a basic knowledge of weather is helpful
