RYA Powerboat Instructor

This is a training course to equip prospective RYA Powerboat Instructor candidates with the skills and knowledge required to teach the RYA Powerboat Scheme at RYA centres in the UK and overseas.

Example of a typical course plan (but this varies depending on the weather, the number of candidates, & experience etc) -

  • Day 1: The course structure; briefing & debriefing; how to structure practical sessions afloat; demonstrations of practical sessions by the candidates

  • Day 2: The Powerboat Level 2 course plan; how to deliver the shorebased elements of the course; further on-the-water practical sessions; further development on debriefing; what/where can a Powerboat Instructor teach.

  • Day 3 (run in conjunction with another Powerboat Trainer): centre admin; course admin; delivery of shorebased sessions; delivery of practical sessions; course de-brief.

During the course, potential Instructors instruct sessions both on and off the water with regular debriefs with the trainer where we ensure that you are getting the key teaching points across on each session.

  • During the course the candidate will receive input from the trainer and also from the other candidates. They will be asked to show the following:

    Knowledge of the subject of powerboating

    Ability to deliver effective teaching sessions

    Ability to demonstrate all elements of the RYA Powerboat Level 2 syllabus

    Ability to deliver at least two theory sessions ashore

    Ability to demonstrate safety awareness for themselves and students throughout

  • RYA Powerboat Instructor Skills Assessment, completed before the first day of this package

    RYA First Aid Certificate or equivalent (essential)

    RYA Powerboat Level 2 (essential)

    RYA Dayskipper theory (desirable)

    RYA SRC (desirable)

    5 years experience powerboating or one season full time (essential)

    Minimum age, 16 years

    Familiarity with a range of craft

    RYA Membership

    • 3 days of training/assessment

    • Use of Maverick, our 6.8m Humber rib

    • Fuel

    • Loan of a life jacket

    • Wet Weather gear (if required)

    • Tea & Coffee
